Rodrigo succeeds from 50-plus twice in one game for first time in career
Updated through April 30, 2025
Rodrigo achieved a personal accomplishment on April 19 in the Battlehawks’ 30-15 loss to the Arlington Renegades as for the first time in his career dating back to high school, the Marietta, Ga. native successfully converted two 50-yard-plus field goals in the same game.
With his team trailing 8-0 in the first quarter, Rodrigo lofted a 55-yard effort over the crossbar, clearing comfortably by a couple of yards. In the second quarter, he made a 31-yarder to bring his team within ten at 16-6, and in the third quarter he launched an impressive hit from 53 yards, passing above the crossbar by perhaps eight or nine yards.
During his career at the University of Georgia, Rodrigo attempted nine field goals from 50-plus, making six of them with a career best of 55 yards in the 2018 Rose Bowl victory over Oklahoma. In high school he made a school-record 56-yarder as well as a 53-yarder and a pair of 51s, but not in the same game. And with the Indianapolis Colts he attempted and made just one from beyond 50, a 53-yarder.

Second-year place kicker/kickoff specialist Rodrigo reached a career-long practice milestone on Sunday, August 8 as he converted a 70-yard field goal in pre-practice work at the Colts’ fall practice facility. It cleared the crossbar by at least two yards.
It was Rodrigo’s longest practice field goal since May 15, 2013, when his delivery was true from 68 yards during a summer filming session before entering his junior year at Sprayberry High School in Marietta, Ga.
During the same pre-practice session, a ritual that Rodrigo began many years ago, he gradually worked back from shorter distances, then made from 61, 65 and 67 yards before the 70-yarder, which was witnessed by a few hundred clapping and cheering Colts fans attending the Colts’ practice.
Rodrigo’s longest in-game field goal in high school was a still-school-record 56 yards in 2014. His longest at University of Georgia was a 55-yarder in the 2018 Rose Bowl, which remains a record for the country’s oldest bowl game. It was the longest attempt of his college career. As a Colts rookie in 2020, Rodrigo’s longest successful field goal was a 53-yarder against Houston on Dec. 20.
Rodrigo becomes Colts’ all-time rookie field goal leader with two in regular season finale vs. Jaguars
Rodrigo began his rookie season as the Indianapolis Colts’ place kicker with an 8-point performance in a 28-20 loss to Jacksonville on the road on Sept. 13. He ended the regular season with another 8-point outing against the Jaguars in a 28-14 victory on Jan. 3 at Lucas Oil Stadium.
In both of those games, the former star from the University of Georgia converted two field goal attempts. In the other 14 games, he made 28 for a season total of 32, lifting him into the top spot as the franchise’s all-time rookie field goal champ.
Rodrigo’s total dropped Raul Allegre into second place. Allegre made 30 during his rookie season in 1983. Allegre’s 30th field goal came on his 35th attempt; Rodrigo’s 35th attempt resulted in his 32nd conversion of the season.
Rodrigo missed five field goal attempts, with four of them hitting either the uprights or crossbar. His only non-contact miss was a 56-yarder against the Jaguars on Jan. 3 that came up a little short. His longest of the season was a 53-yarder against Houston on Dec. 20.
Rodrigo makes his mark on CFP record book
On consecutive Mondays in January of 2018 with nationwide audiences watching, Rodrigo booted himself into several sets of record books as a collegiate kicker as Georgia’s bid for a national title fell agonizingly short.
On Jan. 1, there was Rodrigo’s dramatic 55-yard field goal as time expired in the first half that helped energize the Dawgs’ second-half comeback that resulted in the 54-48 double overtime win over Oklahoma in the CFP semifinal game. That was an all-time record for the venerable Rose Bowl, which has been contested 104 times. It was also the longest field goal in Georgia bowl history, eclipsing Brandon Coutu’s 52-yarder 10 years ago.
On Jan. 8 in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Rodrigo made more kicking history. His 51-yard field goal in overtime was the longest in a CFP final — as was the 55-yarder for any CFP semifinal. He also scored the most kicking points in a CFP final (11) and made the most field goals (3) in a CFP title game. His 23 points in two playoff games is also tied for first all-time.
30-yard FG provides winning points in Liberty Bowl
Rodrigo concluded his redshirt freshman season with 14 field goals after making a 30-yarder on Dec. 30 to help Georgia win the Liberty Bowl over TCU 31-23. The fourth-quarter field goal gave the Bulldogs a 24-23 lead.
For the season, Rodrigo made 78 percent of his field goal attempts; he tried 18, including a 53-yarder against TCU that was blocked as time expired in the first half in the game in Memphis. It was his only 50-plus attempt of the season as the coaching staff gradually stretched out his limits.
He made 100 percent of his field goal tries from 20-29 (7 for 7), 75 percent from 30-39 (3 for 4) and 67 percent from 40-49 (4 for 6).
His season high for a game was 4 against Kentucky. He also made 3 against Vanderbilt, 2 against Auburn and Georgia Tech and one each against Tennessee, Florida and TCU.
He finished the season as the SEC’s leading freshman kick-scorer, justifying his selection to the All-SEC Freshman team as well as the Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-American team. Rodrigo finished the season with 68 points.
